Sustainable Clothing – Amortela’s Giving Back To Planet Earth

Sustainable clothing, slow fashion and ethical fashion – words that caught my eye, when Amortela first announced the coming of their private label of clothing a few weeks ago. Invited to attend the launch of their resort wear the Fiori line, I was inspired to put pen to paper and collected a few stunning images of their clothing.

Amortela is a pretty multi-designer concept store in the bi-lanes of Kasturi Rangan Road, Poes Garden. A 50-year-old bungalow got renovated and transformed into a vibrant space for sustainable fashion. I first met Tija Indrajit, the founder at the inauguration of the store a few months ago and despite being busy with the exuberant crowd of fashion lovers and friends of hers, I could see that passion for sustainable fashion in her eyes and words. Made a mental note to meet her again, but it never happened till I got invited to the launch of Fiori, a part of Amortela’s private label.

The beautiful floral hand embroidery is an ode to femininity, says Tija.

So, Amortela in Spanish and Latin means “love for fabric”. But Tija Indrajit and her team –  store director Naina Chandani and designer Shilpa Iyer have added layers to the ‘love for fabric’ concept. Their brand philosophy is to encourage their customers to look beyond brands and through their Fiori range and many other lines, they have introduced at least 90% of their fabrics being made from non-genetically modified crops. That’s not all ! They insist on employing lean manufacturing methods in order to reduce wastage of water, land and energy. Now, that’s a mark of sustainable clothing !

One of my favourites, this palazzo pants with beautiful embroidery on the additional flaps.

Sporty and flirty, this blue wrap dress.

Delicate, elegant and adds some tenderness to the persona !

One of Tija’s goals is to encourage young budding designers and provide them a space to showcase their creations. Shilpa Iyer is one such designer of Chennai, who has come up with the Fiori line exclusively for Amortela. Together, they are aiming at upping the style quotient of Chennai differently, through sustainable, ethical and slow fashion.

Prettiest jumpsuit ever.

Shilpa Iyer, who played host gracefully at the event, explaining the intricacies of the environment friendly ‘khadi‘ fabric, married to trendy designs and elegant hand embroidery, pointed out their commitment to fair trade, which is also a component of ethical fashion. That involves employing local artisans, empowering women and ensuring fair prices reach them, thereby taking them along the journey. And to emphasise that, Amortela had a loom and an artisan brought in just for the event. Here goes :

The team has termed the Fiori line as slow-fashion-resort-wear. They are not in a hurry to introduce season-specific new designs ; they would rather that their customers enjoy wearing their creations  for as long as they last. Precisely why most of the Fiori line is in khadi, a fabric which can keep cool in summer and afford warmth in colder months.  All their designs lend themselves well to layering. That is Amortela‘s very significant step towards sustainable clothing.

And this one here sums it up.

This one, just right for our still blazing summer in Chennai.

Now the resort wear part of it is what I am not convinced about. They are too pretty to be reserved only for resort wear ! The day I bought the outfit below, I wore it to a very happening event in the evening and I must say it was comfort personified. I accessorized it with a body chain and boots and yes, compliments poured in. The picture by themselves are not high res, nevertheless posting them to show how pretty the dress looked.

Kudos Amortela team and Shilpa Iyer for this wonderful initiative of sustainable clothing and ethical fashion. For that is what our planet needs most.

This is not a commissioned post. I have bought a few clothes and sustainable clothing is a subject close to my heart.

If you want to shop at Amortela, call them at….

Of Earrings And Finger Rings, Limited Edition Handcrafted Jewellery From Sitaram Jewels

Have you noticed how Limited Editions are swished out with much aplomb be it books, apparel, jewellery, furnishings or even alcohol? Coveted and rare, why not? They deserve a special place, their acquisition and possession gives us a high. The Sandalwood Room takes equal pride in displaying handcrafted precious jewellery from Sitaram Jewels at their boutique store in Singapore. Jewellery that is elegant and contemporary, aimed to appeal to  the fashion conscious divas of Singapore.

A pair of exclusive Amethyst hoops style earrings from Sitaram Jewels. Amethyst the protective stone with a sobering and cleansing effect and in the world of gemstones it is known as the seductive stone for its unique colour.

Every piece of jewelry at Sitaram Jewels is unique and one of its kind, hence would qualify for limited edition at all times. In conversation with Lalit Palsani of Sitaram Jewels and Jayashree Mani of The Sandalwood Room, here is why the jewellery of the reputed traditional jewellers of Chennai stands out.

This pair of Beer Quartz and White Diamond hoop earrings pay a delightful tribute to the most lovely of beverages – beer. Elegant, stylish, classy and different!  Beer Quartz is a type of quartz that has a rich golden hue that is reminiscent of the classic beer.  A bit darker and deeper golden hue than that found in Citrine, Beer Quartz is a wonderful semi precious gemstone that complements most skin tones.

Sitaram Jewels begin by choosing a natural gemstone for its beauty and brilliance. But its the cuts that their expert artisans give the stone without altering its basic shape that brings out the beauty of the gemstone. With the gemstone now ready, the designs are built around it. A clear departure from the practice of many jewellers that fit gemstones into the designs. You see now why their jewellery cannot be replicated and is limited edition?

So what do you do when you get requests from customers to replicate jewellery that they have liked on their friend’s fingers or necks, we ask Lalit. He smiles and says, “well, it can get as close to the original as possible, but never the same”! Precisely why celebrities prefer to buy coloured diamonds like Coffee DiamondsTM from us, he says, for their attributes of being rare and unique.

coffee diamonds and white diamonds ring in 18k gold, the sandalwood room

Coffee diamonds and white diamonds in 18k gold

Coffee DiamondTM jewellery from an earlier post.

These coffee diamonds are sourced from Australia the land that yields the best fancy coloured diamonds.

At Sitaram Jewels, a lot of R&D in jewellery has led to new ideas in the settings that encase the precious gemstones to bring out the best in them. The invisible setting and the no-claw setting have soared in popularity, Lalit tells us and since Sitaram Jewels is a trusted name built over years, their customers are willing to take the jewellers’ suggestions and they invariable come back for more, bringing with them family and friends.

A special mention of the rose gold ring below with a circular surface that makes a statement. Round, marquise, princess and pear-shaped Coffee DiamondsTM adorn the ring.

The Sandalwood Room has created a look book with some of their unique pieces in Citrine and Beer Quartz stunners and as Jayashree Mani would put it, ‘a thing of beauty speaks to you and lets you pick it up to make it yours’.

jewellery look bookwith citrine, beer quart gemstones and white diamonds, the sandalwood room

Jewellery look book with citrine, beer quart gemstones and white diamonds

Clearly, the always limited edition of Sitaram Jewels jewellery is handcrafted for those that look for minute traces of beauty and exclusivity. Lalit Palsani says they are glad they partnered with The Sandalwood Room with its penchant for everything organic, natural and handmade. It gladdened him even more to see that every shelf of the lifestyle boutique store is filled with products that encourage traditional craft and artisans. Jayashree Mani at that point pitches in telling us that their tagline is ‘Contemporary Design Traditional Craft’. I guess that says it all.

The previous blog post had featured neck-chains and bracelets in “Colours Of Spring” again some master pieces from Sitaram Jewels.

Gemstone Jewellery ‘Colours Of Spring’ Inspired By Singapore

There are times when all you need is a simple piece of jewellery to perk you up. Or add that dash of elegance to your ensemble. Heading out for an appointment and rummaging for a neck-chain that will make a statement? Yeah, sounds familiar to all of us.

Just what you are looking for are on display at The Sandalwood Room. Enchanting and elegant, these handcrafted neck-chains and bracelets have been curated carefully for the fashion-loving Singapore.

The collection is named ‘Colours Of Spring‘ and is in a way an ode to Singapore with its colourful skyline and architecture, but I see this stunning precious gemstone jewellery range as one that can be worn throughout the year. Crafted by Sitaram Jewels in 18k gold, these chains are one of their kind, no two pieces are alike. Perfect for those fashionistas that seek exclusivity with a passion.

Tourmaline Necklace

multi coloured tourmaline necklace, the sandalwood room

Multi hued Tourmaline necklace

This is what we mean by colours of spring. Enough to brighten up one’s day, this multi-hued tourmaline neck-chain comes with some healing properties too. But before that, just take a keen look at the gemstones in the chain. None shaped like any other, each cut differently. Details like this make Sitaram jewellery so unique.

Tourmaline is an inspiring stone known to enhance tolerance and understanding besides detoxifying our bodies. We must all have one piece of jewellery with tourmalines in it since detoxification is the need of the hour. It relieves stress, increases mental alertness, improves blood circulation and strengthens the immune system.

Amethyst and Aquamarine duo

amethyst and aquamarine necklace, the sandalwood room

Aquamarine and Amethyst necklace

Pair this pretty Amethyst and Aquamarine neck-chain with a white or a black blouse. Lovely, lively and romantic, the necklace seals the love forever. A note on aquamarine and amethyst’s healing properties :

Aquamarine, deriving its name from the latin aqua marinus (water of the sea), get its pale blue colour from the sparkling ocean ● clears the mind ● balances emotions ● instills courage ● dispels fear ● believed to have protective powers ● promotes self-expression ● promotes harmony in relationships ● aids better communication.

Amethyst, long considered a gemstone of royalty, it sure must be worthy of being the preferred gemstone ● a natural stress reliever ● provides spiritual protection ● aids inner strength and clarity of mind ● helps dispel negativity ● helps strengthen immunity and heal imbalances in the body ● attracts abundance.

Turquoise and Tourmaline neck-chain

tourmaline and turquoise necklace, the sandalwood room

Turquoise and Tourmaline necklace

Flaunt this dainty pop of pink and electrifying blue on a date or at a girls brunch. Pink tourmaline clusters and turquoise beads alternated for an elegant and modern look. I would even call it dramatic or sophisticated chic. And Turquoise heals as well.

Known as the Master Healer, it is said to be the bridge between heaven, sky and earth. Known also as a purification stone, it ● dispels negativity ● balances moods and instills inner calm ● stimulates romantic love ● heals the body of many afflictions ● helps prevent panic attacks ● promotes self realisation.

Peridot indulgence

Peridot necklace

I would wear this Peridot neck-chain every day. For one, I could team it with any colour and two, it is a positive energy gemstone passing on feelings of abundance and goodness. August borns, grab it, we are just in time.

Tourmaline bracelet

Sleek And Modern Handmade Jewelry For Singapore

I could go on and on with jewelry quotes, am sure there are as many quotes as all of one’s jewelry put together. I am not even sure which one would number higher!

Chosen carefully, it’s that one piece of an accessory that can make you unique. Jewelry has been a mood lifter on many occasions personally when I have felt luxurious, elegant, rich, sensuous and so much more wearing certain pieces of jewelry. That goes for most of you I guess!

With changing lifestyles, we are forever on a buying spree for clothes and accessories. And when we chance upon handmade jewelry, most of us find it hard to resist the temptation to shop. Even if it means stretching our purses a bit more. For all those fashionistas, The Sandalwood Room presents some exciting jewellery under two brands – the Dusk Jewellery and the Chinoserie Chic range from ICING Accessories, creations of Jan and Mei from Singapore for Singapore to suit every purse though.

The Dusk

Dusk Jewelry collection, the sandalwood room

Collage of Dusk Jewelry

The duo thought Singapore needed bright and uniquely coloured gemstone jewelry and set about collecting handpicked semi-precious, natural gemstones from all over the world. For many artists, dusk has been more inspiring than any other part of the day. True that, the colours of sunset are magical. Jan and Mei got enraptured too, like most of us. In their own words “Just like dusk, we hope to capture the transient beauty of sunset in our Dusk jewelry creations”. Clearly, the wondrous hues of sunset set these two brands of jewelry apart from others.

Sleek neck-chains that can be paired with for an ethnic look or a contemporary ensemble.

Handcrafted in Singapore and set in elegant  brass and 18k gold, they seem to be just right for Singapore, keeping the designs simple so that the natural beauty of the gemstones shine through.

The Chinoserie Chic by Icing Accessories

Lovingly hand-made jewelry with porcelains, pearls, shells and ceramics seem to be inspired by the modern woman. This is a new collection reflecting oriental elegance and femininity.

Singaporeans seek sleekness and modernity in designs and the Dusk and Chinoserie Chic jewelry seem to have just that as their leitmotif.

The Sandalwood Room is excited to collaborate with the ICING Gifts and showcase their line of jewelry on their shelves, being committed to handmade products. Jan and Mei are the first local designers to display their wares in The Sandalwood Room and are equally thrilled to have found a boutique store that values their work. More reasons in line with The Sandalwood Room’s philosophy:

  • It is a label that is easy to wear and conveys simple elegance.
  • Most of the designs are one of a kind
  • Every piece of Dusk and ICING Accessories jewelry is designed and handmade locally in Singapore.

  • Every design is limited to a few numbers to keep the jewelry unique and exclusive
  • All earring hooks and necklace chains are 18k gold-plated

The brand’s jewelry pieces showcased in The Sandalwood Room are exclusive to the boutique, dont look for them anywhere else in Singapore.

The Sandalwood Room looks forward to partnering with more local designers and brands of Singapore going forward. After all, it feels quite rewarding to be recognised and accepted.

Care For Your Indigo

Colour my world, colour my world indigo.

Someone took these words very seriously. Indigo is to be found in every wardrobe today, of man, woman and child. Shades galore in the volumes of jean garments that sell like hot cakes and have become kind of comfort wear.

Indigo Collage on quilt, the sandalwood room

An interesting indigo collage on a quilt

Indigo dye has captured the human imagination for centuries as the world’s only natural blue pigment” ( Quotation courtesy : EAST )

I am quite intrigued by this colour and its power over us. We go looking for that particular shade of indigo or the blue as we generally term it, spend hours shooting down any other shade than the one on our minds and yet over time when that pair of denim lightens bringing out a lighter shade, we revel in that too!

Indigo patchSo yes, this indigo has ruled our senses from as long back as 2000 BC and still holds sway over our minds. India in a large measure is credited with introducing the pigment indigo to the world of dyeing, deriving its name from the plant Indigofera tinctoria and related species. While jeans are on one spectrum of the fashion world, indigo dyed apparel, ethnic and global have occupied a large chunk of the remaining space. They are even more sought after by those endowed with artistic tendencies. Indigo on apparel somehow tends to connect us to nature just like the brick reds or browns stand for all that is rustic.

And here is an example of an artist from Chennai, Lakshmi Srinath who has used indigo to such a striking advantage in this beautiful ensemble in stone. More on her art in a later post sometime.

Lakshmi Srinath art in stone using indigo, My Thought lane

Stone sculpted art using indigo by Chennai artiste Lakshmi Srinath

Something that is so beautiful and rooted to nature, this indigo dye needs special care on fabrics. It is a natural dye and contains no harsh chemicals and toxins. A peep into maintaining indigo dyed fabrics:

Care for your Indigo

  • Like all natural dyed fabrics, indigo dyed garments are prone to bleeding in the first couple of washes. Worry not, it is the excess dye getting washed out.
  • In countries that use treated water, it is recommended to dry-clean the garments for the first wash
  • The clothes must be dried and stored away from the sun. If not adhered to, then the clothes are likely to fade in patches an along the folding lines of the garment.
  • Must be washed in cold water and air-dried.
  • Advisable to avoid the washing machine. Handwash for better results.
  • Wash the garment before the first use to avoid the indigo dye running on to your inner garments.
  • Damp clothes are likely to transfer the dye on to other clothes. So dry them completely before wearing.

Indigo is a dye different from any other and the process of dyeing is as unique as the colour itself, involving days of the pigment being fermented in the vat. The vat is a bulging narrow mouthed pot 10-15 feet deep and sunk into the floor of an area that is covered and does not allow sunlight to fall on it directly. It would look something like this, like a hole in the floor.

indigo-vats

Indigo vats , image courtesy : Kimonoboy

The vat houses a living organism that helps in the fermentation. It is filled with a thick sandy dye-liqour to 1/4th of its capacity. Indigo, slaked lime and molasses are added with water to top it up. An artisan then feeds the vat daily with the same ingredients for the next two weeks till the desired look and feel is achieved, which could take about 20 days in all. One of the reasons why indigo dyed garments require a wash before its first wear.

Japanese are extremely fond of this hue and indigo dyeing in Japan dates back to the 10th century. In Japanese, indigo dyeing is known as ai-zome.

Here is an interesting note about the process. In the first step, the indigo is “reduced” , changing it from blue to yellow. When the dipped yarn is brought out it turns a bright green. The air around when the yarn is put to dry changes it to the beautiful deep and rich indigo. Fascinating!

And here are a few beauties from The Sandalwood Room for indigo tops the list most often amongst handmade products.

The Sandalwood Room prides itself on being the only one of its kind in Singapore. It is a boutique for those who love the finer things of life. Lancome Le Crayon Khol Pencil Is Great For Eyes and Eyebrows

Like most women, I cannot do without  eyebrow shaping tools, but am most comfortable with using an eyebrow pencil. I haven’t had much success with gel or powders to shape my brows. I could probably do with a bit more patience and practice.

This Lancome Le Crayon Khol pencil, doubles up as an eyebrow pencil and to me is worth its weight in gold! I did try out other options when Lancome shut shop in Chennai. The Mac pencil tip kept breaking every time I used the lightest of strokes and I gave up. I finally ordered the Lancome Le Crayon Khol pencil online from Strawberry.net and it took me thirty-three days to finally get the product in hand. That was a bad experience but let that be.

I have been meaning to write about this favourite of mine from the time I bought it, but got down to it only after one-fourth of the pencil has been used up.

Thumbs up :

Glides smoothly without getting lumpy

The 022 bronze shade lends a natural look

Affords light feathery strokes

The pencil lasts and lasts ( I use it twice, sometimes thrice a day )

Does not smudge easily, in fact hardly.

lancome le crayon khol pencil 022 bronze made up eyebrows

Eyebrows made up with Lancome Le Crayon Khol pencil

Weight : 1.8 g/0.06 oz

Price : Rs 1689/ $25

A good deal for the price and quality it provides.

I have read good reviews about it working wonderfully as an eyeliner, which is what it is in the market for probably, but to me the Lancome Le Crayon Khol liner will remain the best eyebrow pencil till I find another superior one.

Gemstones And Jewelry, A Two Fold Healing

The world needs healing and the quest is on for more ways of doing it. A portion of our society has become extremely intolerant, but thanks be to God, a larger section seems to be on a mission to bring peace and harmony into their lives and others’.

There is so much healing required today that we are willing to embrace any new form to achieve it. But through all that, the power of healing stones, crystals and gems has stood its ground and in fact is making a big comeback for holistic health and well-being. I think our faith in the healing power of gemstones and crystals is firmly rooted and connected to Mother Earth. I also think what weighs in their favour is that  just like us Homo sapiens have evolved to our present form through biologic processes, so have the crystals and gemstones gone through the geologic processes of heating, cooling and rearrangement to attaining their final natural form.

We can add another C to the three Cs of gemstones – Cure ! But frankly when the beautiful gemstones get set in jewelry, the healing process has already begun from the moment it is worn on the body. Those admiring looks  stemming from moods being lifted by the sheer colour of the gemstone and the play of light on it. That is why I call it two-fold healing.

Ancient civilisations the world over have used gemstones and crystals to heal living beings and their surrounding spaces and energies in several ways. Ground into powders or elixirs, worn on persons or carried along and used in ceremonies and rituals.

My personal take on this subject is that there is a symbiotic connection between gemstones and living beings for whom the healing powers are being harnessed. It is believed that each gemstone comprises of minute crystals that are in constant motion, thereby emitting energy fields. Left to themselves, I wonder if the energy fields would acquire any frequency. But when used to heal by being placed either on bodies or certain environments, the minute crystals could get into an activation mode and emit higher levels of energy.

I haven’t studied Colour, but certainly believe that colours influence and affect and I am sure a gemstone’s colour plays a dynamic role in its healing power. Coupled with the play of light, the combination can calm or stimulate, heal or purify.

Wearing gemstones on your person is probably the easiest and simplest way of letting their energy work on you. We see innumerable people wearing jewelry encrusted with gemstones today to create harmonious vibrations in relationships, for health, for business and for peace. The trend has been profitable to jewelers and most of them have an expert on board to guide and advice customers in choosing appropriate gemstones.

A look at how some gemstones heal and contemporary  jewelry from The Sandalwood Room by Sitaram Jewels . All set in 18 carat gold, each piece is unique – no two pieces are identical.

Simple Boho-look With A ‘Mix N Match’

Let me be honest. This boho-look was not created for the post, but the other way round. A casual lunch date with my husband and I put together a mix-n-match ensemble simply being rushed for time. The venue was pretty and I quite liked what I saw in the mirror as I stepped out – reasons enough for a woman to go overdrive on pictures. WordPress and all you bloggers have been so inspiring and encouraging, a blog post got created. This, in fact is the first fashion post which features an archetypal me!!

The sunlight, the greenery around and the pathway were perfect too.

The layered skirt is only half-captured in the above pic, so thought of compiling this gallery. The wooden neck chain is special to me in that I bought it from a little girl who was in tears at the floating market near Cambodia. Her even more little brother was sick and the entire family bent backwards to make a sale from their tiny boat in order to buy medical aid for the ailing one. I cannot erase from my memory the look of gratitude on their faces when I paid the girl. My friends were quick to notice it and became the Samaritans; several pieces of jewelry from the family’s basket of merchandise filled our shopping bags. We smiled and they smiled as our boats moved away…….

I loved this boho-look so much, I tried it with another set of clothes on another day and achieved a similar look almost, with a change in the accessories of course and different inners.

Flash back to an earlier post on hand-made jewelry in which I had featured the neck chain below. It could have been shown to better advantage worn with a contrast block coloured top no doubt.

Perhaps I am lazy and boho-looks come in handy, or perhaps I am extra free-spirited. But the fact is that I love them and they make me feel good and creative. A look that is too coordinated probably is not my type.

Hope you guys like the boho look. Looking forward to your comments.

Some Chic For Your Tiny Tots – Frocks, Booties and Bibs

I know why we all love clothes and want more and more in our wardrobes. Obsession for clothes began even while we were in our mothers’ wombs. It all started with our moms. Even as we came to life in the most compact space and gradually started stirring, our mothers-to-be spent considerable amounts of time and money shopping for us. We heard colours and patterns being discussed, it did not make much sense to us then but the process had begun.

I remember the fervor with which I had shopped when I was pregnant with my baby. And just like every mother, had treasured the baby clothes for months before he was born, spreading them out on the bed almost every week with dreams in my eyes.

Clothes for the tiny tots can be as adorable as the little ones themselves. Here is some Chic for your tiny tots from The Sandalwood Room. With most of Asia warming up, you may be on the look out for clothes and accessories that will keep your little ones cool and comfortable. Add some style and colour in keeping with spring with these 100% cotton, hand block printed frocks, booties and bibs.

A note about hand block printing and Soma brand:

Hand block printing is an ancient Indian textile tradition and existed as early as 2000 BC. In the age of mass production, this craft seems to be waning, but thanks to companies like Soma this cultural tradition has been kept alive passionately in villages through Rajasthan. Wash & Care instructions for this cotton clothing:

Indigo tends to run. Vegetable dyes are likely to bleed, but will not catch on to other clothes. Like in Singapore, if your country uses treated water, dry-cleaning for the first wash for the apparel is recommended.

Year of the Red Monkey

What comes to my mind when I think of a monkey is that they are fun, energetic, curious and mischievous. So I guess this Chinese New Year is going to be all of that. Here’s wishing everyone a fabulous Time with family and friends in the year of the Red Monkey from The Sandalwood Room team.

Before you go shopping and gifting, a little trivia on why the Chinese New Years are named after animals. Legend has it that Buddha, in his times asked all the animals to meet him on the Chinese New Years day. Only twelve animals turned up. Buddha then named a year after each one and declared that people born in each animal’s year would have some of the traits of that animal ( I wish I could choose the animal or the year !!!! ). So you could be forgiven if you monkey around a bit this year !!

Chinese New Year is China’s most important traditional festival. It is also called the Spring festival. And just like a new year’s time in every other country is a time of celebration and jubilation, so is it for the Chinese, lasting for a week. An official week-long holiday from 7 to 13 February, for family feasts, fireworks, worship and gifting.

There are many interesting stories and legends that explain the start of the Chinese New Year. Click here to find out.

Red symbolises fire, and as per the Chinese legends can drive away evil and bring good luck. So people wear red clothes, decorate their homes with red festoons and give their children and the elderly red envelopes with money in them.

So here are some gift ideas in red. This year, gift these note-pads, boxes and bags. They will be cherished much after the Chinese New Year for their multi-purpose value.
